International Baccalaureate

Providence Hall Charter School is the first school in Utah to become a K-12 Authorized IB World School, offering the PYP, MYP and DP to its students! The International Baccalaureate (IB) offers three programs for students:

Primary Years Programme

The primary goal of the Primary Years Programme (PYP) is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through their actions. PYP provides a framework for organizing curriculum and delivering instruction. It is not a curriculum the school purchased to implement, rather it is a framework into which we fit our curriculum and the Utah State Standards. All grade levels focus their curriculum around the same six themes of global significance. These themes are intended to help children engage with their world and the world around them. In this program, students inquire, make connections, develop conceptual understanding, think critically, work collaboratively, consider multiple perspectives construct meaning, reflect and take action.

Middle Years Programme

The Middle Years Program (MYP) is designed for students in grades 6 - 10. It provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement&mdashessential qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders. The MYP consists of eight subject groups: language acquisition, language and literature, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical and health education, and design. By situating content in real-world global contexts and teaching students through a conceptual framework, MYP teachers help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and responsibility in their community.

Diploma Programme

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is an academically challenging and balanced educational program that prepares students for success in college and beyond. The program is nationally and internationally-recognized and respected by the world's leading universities as the most rigorous coursework available to high school students.

Providence Hall High School students may choose to take individual IB DP courses or enroll in the full Diploma Program and become an IB Diploma Candidate. Diploma Candidates choose a balanced program of six DP courses, complete a Theory of Knowledge course, write a 4000-word academic research paper known as an Extended Essay, and participate in Creativity, Action and Service (CAS). Upon completion of the program, Diploma Candidates have the opportunity to earn an International Baccalaureate Diploma in addition to their Providence Hall High School Diploma.

Based on exam scores, students have the opportunity to earn significant college credit or advanced course standing at universities throughout Utah and beyond. For current information regarding a particular university's recognition policy of IB credit, please consult the university's website.
